The Teacher Tab contains general information about you, the teacher. Most of the fields are self-explanatory, but a few deserve comments. Grade Point can make use of your existing e-mail account to send progress reports to parents and to make data transport easier. Most of the comments below are related to setting up that aspect of the program.

Fields and Controls

Teacher Title

The Title is used in the headings of reports. Spanish progress reports rely on the title to determine which gender form of the word teacher (Profesor/Profesora) will be used.

Name Fields

Although anything can be entered in the name fields, whatever is entered must match the name you provide when registering, or you won't be able to properly register the program.

E-mail Address

Grade Point is able to generate and send e-mail. There are several places in the program that can make use of your e-mail address. Two of the most noteworthy are:

·You can have Grade Point send you a copy of each progress report you send via e-mail.

·You can e-mail yourself a backup copy of your data.

E-mail User ID

This is the ID your e-mail provider gives you when you establish an e-mail account. Your e-mail ID is used for authentication when you send or receive e-mail.

Password

E-mail service providers require you to log in before receiving e-mail. Some providers require a login before sending e-mail. If your provider requires a login to send e-mail, enter your password here.

Password Required

If your e-mail provider requires a login to send e-mail, put a check in this box.

SMTP Server (Host)

Your internet service provider's SMTP server is the server used to send e-mail It is also known as an outgoing mail server. You can use the SMTP server's IP address instead of its name, if you prefer. This information should be supplied by your provider when you establish an e-mail account.

Example SMTP Server Settings:

·Earthlink: mail.earthlink.net or smtp.earthlink.net
·MSN:   smtp.email.msn.com or secure.smtp.email.msn.com
·IP Address: 207.217.120.18 (An example Earthlink SMTP server)
·AOL:   Not supported. See note below.
·Others: Check with your service provider.

AOL Note: At the time of this writing, AOL does not use standard SMTP to handle outgoing mail. They have their own proprietary methods. A search of this topic on the Internet will reveal that many third party programs that generate e-mail (such as Grade Point) have trouble coping with AOL as a service provider. Many of them recommend switching service providers, or at least getting an additional free service provider in order to be able to use the e-mail features within their programs. Try searching the Internet for "free internet service provider."

Port

The port is a specific communications channel used to send e-mail. The default is 25, which will appear automatically. Use this value unless your service provider tells you to use a different value.

CC Progress Reports

When this item is checked, Grade Point will send you a copy of each progress report that you send via e-mail. The reports will be sent to the address you provide in the E-mail Address field.

Log E-mail Events

When this item is checked, Grade Point will keep a log of all e-mail activity. The log can be accessed from the program's main menu (File, Open) or from the Progress Reports window.
